Wow! What a chance to show learners a change that they can make to the world by their own doing. I tasked the Grade 7 learners of the school I was placed in with a chance to do their own social action plan - not actually do it but an idea how they can make the world a better place using the Good Deeds Guy as a reference for them. We worked tirelessly on this task for 5 weeks, having countless meetings where we shared ideas with the learners, learners shared their progress with the Grade 7 teachers, and we all worked together to make it come true. The idea was to show learners that small actions can have a huge impact, and that they had a certain responsibility to make it happen. The Grade 7’s had to use a sustainable goal from the 17 global sustainable goals to pick an idea to work from, and then at the end of the 5 weeks, they were to present their ideas to the school, parents and community on how they feel they could change the world, and what they did through showing evidence of them putting their ideas into action. It was a big task, and a task that took a lot of time, through helping the learners set up their spots where they would present to facilitating the presentations of the learners, and then listening to their reflections the day after they had presented. I feel like I worked with a fantastic group of Grade 7 teachers who helped me, and the learners see this action plan through and making it just as real for those who came to see what the learners were up to for 5 weeks. It wasn’t an easy task, I struggled a lot with helping the learners prepare for their exhibition day in the final week, as this took a lot of late hours after school, took some teaching time away from teachers who were set to help me, and it required a lot of school resources to be used and loaded to us for the exhibition day. Setting up for the exhibition literally took the whole day, as learners and teachers were setting up the stage and learners were practicing their welcoming ceremony for the next day, but it was all worth it in the end when exhibition day came, and everyone was impressed with the work that the learners and myself have put in.
